Who is your Everyday Hero?
Our four weeks of Everyday Hero nominations and awards are over, and we learned about some remarkable people. You can read about them, below.
Special thanks to everyone who was nominated - each of you are an Everyday Hero! And thanks to all those who took the time to nominate; it is great that these folks are getting recognition for their efforts.
We will keep the information about the nominations here on this page so that anyone who visits gets a better idea about what we were trying to do.
Nominate an Everyday Hero and they could win $250
Do you know anyone who has committed a random act of kindness?
Do you know anyone who is paying it forward?
"Everyday Heroes" are all around us. They are individuals and organizations who freely donate their experience, talent, time and hard work in an effort to benefit folks who aren't as fortunate. What do they have in common? They all have the ability to make a personal connection that frequently turns into a pay-it-forward wave that spreads around their local community and our world.
Each week, nominate a person or an organization that has inspired you with their acts of selflessness in our community.
Submit the name of your Everyday Hero here on our Facebook page, along with your reasons for nominating them.
Drawings will be held every Friday and you will be notified via Facebook if your nominee was chosen to win $250.
We will pick one winner every week for four consecutive weeks.
Employees and families of affiliated companies are not eligible to win. No purchase necessary. If a winner is unreachable after seven (7) days, or if that winner is unavailable for prize fulfillment, an alternate winner will be selected. Winner will assume any federal or state tax liability that may be incurred. Winners will be randomly selected. Promotion dates: 2-11, 2-18, 2-25, 3-3
By entering this contest you are adding your address to SOSVM's database.
Our Week 1 Everyday Heroes are Amber and Andrew Jensen.

Here is their nomination from Courtney Duskey: "One of my everyday heroes is my two best friends. Back in the fall, my friend met a woman who was having a hard time in life and offered to help her. The woman had five children. Sadly those five children were removed from her care and DHS called my friend to see if she would take in all of them. My friend and her husband already have four children of their own. Without hesitation, they said yes. They had no idea how they would do it but they knew the Lord would provide. They got beds and clothing and transformed their little three bedroom home to accommodate the nine children. The kids are all thriving and doing wonderfully now, even the two with special needs. This may only be a temporary situation for those children but right now I believe they have found the best family for them to love them when they needed it most."
Thank you both for everything you do!
Our Week Two Everyday Hero is Janelle Scofield.
Here are her nominations from Joy Maxwell-Brown and Lisa Marie Sartain Parara: "My every day hero is my sister, Janelle Scofield. She is a hero to so many! She is always thinking of others and doing for others, always putting herself last. She has volunteered at numerous nonprofits for years and even opened a community center in a little town who desperately needed it. She has volunteered for years for Toys For Tots, coaching, food pantries, churches, Arthritis Foundation just to name a few! She writes grants and puts together huge fundraising events for foundations and organizations such as the Ethan Jostad Foundation, Faith Fulmer Foundation, BFVolunteer Fire Dept., the nationally known Ronald McDonald House and many more!
The most amazing thing is she does all of this even while her own kids have been in and out of the Portland Hospitals for the past year and a half where they had to fight for their lives and continue to travel for medical care up there. She and her sons are true warriors! Through their medical tragedies they started a support group called Spencer and Brycens Passion for Warriors. Through this group, they give other families help, support, and many resources to assist them though their children's medical trials.
She has been through what no parent should ever have to go through! The suffering of her kids was unbearable to even strangers but No matter what she is going through, Janelle is always focused on serving others! She also has started to help others by speaking to large groups about their story no matter how hard it is to relive! She has made a HUGE difference in our community and our world!"
Lisa Marie Sartain Parara: "Through everything your sister has been through she is ALWAYS around to help out my family. Spencer and I got sick at the same time with almost the same disease. And then tragedy struck her family again 6 weeks later with Brycen. Yet she has still found time to help my family and to support me! You are blessed to have her as a sister and I am blessed to call her my friend!!!"
Thank you Janelle for giving as you do; you are an inspiration to everyone who knows your story!
Our Week Three Everyday Hero is
Shelby Spiker, and here is one of many
nominations: Deanna Jakeway-Gheen: "I would like to nominate my amazing 14 year old daughter, Shelby Spiker, who is organizing a Lupus fundraising walk. Myself, my sister, and my niece have the disease and Shelby has decided to set up the 'Lupus Walk 2012.'
She has worked tirelessly to gain awareness for the disease and has gotten some local businesses on board to assist her. Tim's Backyard BBQ will be at the walk to keep us fed and Body Cover of Grants Pass has assisted in making T-shirts for the event.
She has walked endless miles handing out flyers and asking businesses for any contribution possible. All of her efforts will be donated to the Lupus Foundation of America. Her passion for this fundraiser has been awe inspiring and the fact that she is only 14 makes it seem all the more amazing.
Pride fills my heart while tears of happiness fill my eyes when I see the accomplishments she is making. She deserves to be the Hero of the Week and to recognize for her heartfelt efforts to work for a cure for this disease."
Thank you Shelby for the work that you are doing to raise funds for Lupus; you really are an inspiration to us all!
Our Week Four Everyday Hero is
Steve Hale. Here is what one of his friends had to say: Mark Unger: "I nominate Steve Hale at Celebrate Recovery @ Trail Christian Fellowship he has given countless hours in his pursuit to help those that have hurts and hangups in life. The man is simply amazing he help guide me and saved my life from sure disaster. He also runs the Foundations for Recovery Center in the old Woolworths building and is working hard to change the image of Methford (Medford). I hope he wins this as he volunteers most all of his time and does not get the compensation he deserves, sometimes hardly enough money for gas but he would walk to help others if he had to. Please pick Steve."
Thank you for everything that you do, Steve. Your actions speak loudly and carry a message of hope into the future.
