Volvo Tops European Car Makers in Carbon Reduction

In their recently released annual report on carbon emissions, the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E), looked at the top players in the European automotive industry when it comes to reducing their carbon footprints. Southern Oregon Subaru Volvo Mitsubishi is proud to announce that Volvo led the pack.
There are of course, different ways to measure how companies are working to cut their carbon emissions, but T&E simply calculated the amount of carbon emissions companies have been able to reduce in the last year. With leading European automakers averaging out between two- and six percent, The Volvo Car Corporation stood above the rest with a reduction of nine-percent!
Volvo beat out the top eight largest automakers thanks in part to their green initiative called "DRIVe towards zero." With an ultimate goal of creating cars with zero carbon emissions, Volvo has fuel alternatives and highly efficient engines on their radar. This nine percent cut is just the beginning, according the Volvo's Senior VP of Research and Development, Peter Mertens, "The aim is to come down to an average of 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer across our total car sales in 2020."1 To put this in perspective, carbon dioxide emissions from new cars in Europe currently average out to about 140 grams per kilometer.
Mertens further explains this large undertaking, "In theory that is entirely feasible, but a lot depends on developments in legislation, incentives, energy availability and of course customer demand. In addition, the EU intends to introduce a new method for calculation carbon dioxide, and this too will impact our plan."2
